ABOUT TANGIWETO

Tangi Weto is a queer Indigenous performance collaboration from Aotearoa, New Zealand, drawn to the collisions between the intimate and the political, the mundane and the absurd. Composed of artists Jessie McCall and Presley Ziogas, Tangi Weto (a te reo Māori concept loosely translating to “crybaby”) is a collaborative investigation of interdependence, power, death, and the invisible labour that sustains our lives.
Tangi Weto embraces ‘low culture’ as a vehicle of the transcendent. Camp, pop, humour and spectacle are portals into complex questions, allowing us to approach urgent realities from surprising angles. We attempt a radically honest rendering of the social, ecological and political realities of a globalised present - centering the vital role of indigenous kaupapa and queer phenomenology in bringing the ‘glitch’ into a colonial-capitalist mainframe. Our search is for more expansive ways to move forward, together.
Working across choreography, performance art, spatial design, found object, and low-fi digital media, we build distinctive performance worlds filled with idiosyncratic movement vocabularies, spatial interventions and the slippery recontextualisation of everyday materials and images. Through these forms we labour at the radically collectivising power of live performance.
